Props B. K. S. Iyengar is usually credited with pioneering the use of props in yoga. Blankets, bolsters, blocks, belts, and (sand)bags (which I think of as the five B’s), plus chairs, wedges, weights, and a variety of other items can be used to help beginning (and other) students achieve the kind of muscolo-skeletal alignment we’re looking for. Iyengar says that in a way the props serve as a substitute for the teacher. Critics claim that Iyengar students are addicted to props. They have a point, but from our point of view, using blankets under the shoulders in shoulder-stand produces a healthier and much more interesting pose. |
